# Reverse Engineering A methodology for *reconstructing* a system you did not design and whose source you may not have. It is the sibling of `software-archaeology`, and the difference is the whole point: archaeology holds the code and abduces the author's *intent*; reverse engineering often holds only the artifact — a binary, a capture, a format, a live black box — and must reconstruct the *mechanism*. `abductive-engineering` supplies the engine (A–D–I loop, semiotic triad); `secure-by-construction` supplies the hostile-input battery; `red-team-auditing` supplies the standard of proof (`CONFIRMED` is earned by a discriminating experiment, never asserted). This skill points all of them at a system whose interior is dark. It exists because a language model reconstructing an unknown system has three strong and dangerous default habits: 1. **It narrates a design it cannot see.** Given a sliver of surface — a magic number, an export table, a handful of strings — it emits a confident, complete architecture, backfilling the enormous unobserved interior from training priors.
