Answer a question by searching the project's own docs and code first, then official sources, and file the dated, sourced answer where it will be read again. Adds to an existing doc before creating a new one, marks anything unverified, and keeps a one line summary with the headline finding in the rules file's Docs index. Gives a short answer in chat first. Use when the user asks to research, look into, compare options for, or find out how something works before deciding or building.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Research Answer the question, then file the answer where someone will find it next time. Most research docs are written once and never opened again. In one shipped app, 108 of 134 research docs were never touched after the day they were written. What got read was the one line summary in the rules file's Docs index, because the rules file is loaded every session. So the index line matters more than the doc. Write both, and write the index line as if it is the only thing anyone will read. Do not write app code during research. If the answer says to change something, say so and let the user decide. ## 1. Pin down the question Restate the question in one sentence, and the decision it should inform. If the question is too vague to answer (for example "look into payments"), ask one short question to narrow it. Otherwise start. ## 2. Look at what the project already knows Before searching the web: 1. Read the **Docs** section of the rules file (`CLAUDE.md` or `AGENTS.md`). 2. Search the docs folder and the root docs for the topic and its synonyms: `grep -ril "<term>" docs/ *.md`. Try two or three words, not one. 3. Search the code for the feature or library involved. …

How to install
mdr add namedtoaster/the-last-mile/research@sha256:06afa70e17b3c8fbThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261011.023ac29, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
