When the user wants to SEE, render, visualize, preview, or "show me" a chart, diagram, mock-up, table, or interactive widget — render it with the show_artifact tool instead of writing files to disk. Also when you write a standalone document the user will keep or edit (a README, spec, report, letter) — put it in the panel with show_artifact(kind="markdown") and a short summary in chat, not a long markdown block in the reply.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Rendering artifacts (generative UI) The console has an **Artifact panel** powered by the `show_artifact` tool. Use it whenever the user wants to **look at something rendered** rather than get source files. ## The presentation ladder — prefer the lowest tier that answers protoAgent can show an answer at four tiers. **Prefer the lowest tier that answers the request**: each rung costs more than the one below it (a component more than text, a sandboxed frame more than a component) and a plainer answer reads faster, so climb only when the rung below genuinely can't carry the answer. How to install
mdr add protolabsai/protoagent/rendering-artifacts@sha256:73305464c000e1f6The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261029.970834a, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
