# Index memory files Derive the file or directory path from the current user request. If the request does not clearly specify the file or directory path, ask before calling a tool — and in a non-interactive context (a subagent or scripted run with nobody to ask), do not stall and do not guess: stop and report `insufficient_input` naming the missing file or directory path. A request that does specify the file or directory path proceeds normally in either context. Require an explicit absolute file or directory path (or one starting with `~`) before calling `mem_index`; never rely on its `.` default and never pass a relative path — this server's working directory is the plugin directory, not the user's. Resolve ambiguity with the user before indexing a broad directory. Use `force=false` and `auto_tag=false` unless the user explicitly requests otherwise. Report scanned, indexed, skipped, deleted, and blocked counts. Explain redaction or embedding-mismatch failures without bypassing them automatically.

How to install
mdr add memtomem/memtomem/memtomem-index@sha256:a0d1f7ba218decb4The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261025.d86a6c8, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
