Capture an architectural decision as an ADR once it has been reached — a choice that constrains future work, had viable alternatives that were rejected, and would be expensive to revisit. Use when a design discussion has converged on such a decision, when the user asks for an ADR, or when a recorded decision changes. Do NOT use for reversible implementation choices, library picks with no lasting constraint, or to minute a discussion that has not concluded.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Architecture Decision Record An ADR records **why** the system is shaped the way it is, for a reader who was not in the room and cannot ask. ## ALWAYS apply the three tests before writing Write an ADR only when a decision has been **reached** and meets all three: 1. **It constrains future work.** Later changes must live with it. 2. **Viable alternatives were rejected**, and the rejection is not self-evident. 3. **It would be expensive to revisit** — reversing it means reworking code, data, or infrastructure. A decision that fails any test is a normal implementation choice. It belongs in the code and the component's documentation, not here. **NEVER open an ADR because a discussion started.** Agents and users weigh trade-offs constantly — which library, how to shape a service, whether to add a cache. Minuting all of that buries the handful of records that matter, and this repository's retrieval already ranks documents by standing. The trigger is *convergence*, not debate. Worked distinctions: | Situation | ADR? | Why | |---|---|---| | "Should this service use a queue or direct calls?" — still being argued | **No** | No decision yet. Wait for convergence. | …

How to install
mdr add dpalfery/kyber-weave/architecture-decision-record@sha256:59ef4140d5c67ac5The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261021.26ee555, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
