Hypothesis-driven threat hunting framework with hunt categories, required data sources, worked hunts for DNS tunneling, lateral movement, and persistence, and a hunt documentation template. Use when planning, running, or documenting a threat hunt.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Threat Hunting Methodology > Hypothesis-driven hunting framework, data analysis techniques, and hunt documentation patterns for proactive threat detection. ## Knowledge Base ### What is Threat Hunting Threat hunting is the proactive, analyst-driven search for threats that have evaded automated detection. Unlike detection engineering (which builds rules that fire automatically), hunting is a human-led investigation that uses hypotheses, data analysis, and domain expertise to find adversary activity that does not match any existing rule. Hunting assumes the adversary is already inside. The question is not "are we safe?" but "what evidence would we expect to see if we were compromised?" ### The Hypothesis-Driven Framework Every hunt starts with a hypothesis. A good hypothesis is: - **Testable**: Can be confirmed or refuted with available data - **Specific**: Targets a particular technique, actor, or behavior - **Scoped**: Has defined time windows and system boundaries - **Intelligence-driven**: Based on threat intelligence, ATT&CK techniques, or known detection gaps ``` Hypothesis Template: "If [threat actor / technique / behavior] is present in our environment, …

How to install
mdr add hermeticormus/libresecops-claude-code/threat-hunting-methodology@sha256:dea21f4592cc593eThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260930.71a2663, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
