`library-first` applied to tooling: check the project's own scripts, then `devil <tool>`, then the vetted external registry, before writing a shell or Python utility. Use when editing shell or Python scripts, or a Makefile.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Script library — check the registry before you write a script `library-first` applied to tooling. Before writing a shell or Python utility, find out whether it already exists. Most "quick scripts" are the fourth copy of something. ## The order to look 1. **The project's own scripts.** `devil facts` reports the make targets, npm scripts and task-runner entries that already exist. A repo almost always has a command for the thing you are about to script by hand. 2. **`devil <tool>`** (the kit's `tools/*.sh`). The parsing and gate layer: `digest`, `facts`, `preflight`, `codemap`, `untested`, `dupes`, `quality`, `watch`, `selfcheck`, `context`, `caveat`. Do not reimplement one of these badly. 3. **The registry.** `devil scripts list` — a vetted, version-pinned subset of an external library (valgrind wrappers, a comment stripper, C-norm helpers, header-cycle detection, markdown-to-PDF). `show <name>` gives the real arguments and exit codes. 4. **A one-liner.** `rg`, `jq`, `awk`, `find`. If a pipeline does it, write the pipeline, not a script (`rules/minimalism-ladder.md` rung 5). …

How to install
mdr add univers42/claude-deal-with-the-devil/script-library@sha256:055ab78205289197The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260930.dc5adef, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
