# Freelance Positioning A generalist freelancer competes on price against everyone; a positioned freelancer competes on relevance against almost no one. The costly mistake this skill prevents is staying broad out of fear: "I don't want to turn away work" keeps rates pinned at commodity levels because no client pays a premium for interchangeable. Install this skill first in the Freelancer / Consultant OS pack - the niche chosen here is the input to productized-service-designer, and the pricing in retainer-pricing-calculator only holds up if the positioning supports it. Worked example throughout the pack: Maya, a freelance brand designer, currently earning $6,000 a month on hourly work at $75/hr, moving to productized retainers. ## Operating procedure Follow the steps in order.
