Author and update Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) — the durable record of a decision and its trade-offs, in docs/adr/NNNN-*.md.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# ADR Writing > **Defer to `orc:doc-writing`** for the shared scaffolding: the doc-type map (ADR vs PRD vs TRD vs RFC vs postmortem, and how ADRs differ from RFCs and plans), the shared section outline, the `docs/<type>s/NNNN-*.md` numbering & publication convention, and the review gates. This skill carries only the ADR-specific template, status transitions, and tone. ADRs are the contract between past-you and future-you. They capture *why* a decision was made, not just *what* was chosen, so a year later nobody has to reverse-engineer the trade-offs from code. ## When to write one Write an ADR when **all** of these are true: - The decision is **architectural** — affects multiple modules, defines a boundary, picks a technology, or sets a convention everyone follows. - The decision is **non-obvious** — there were real alternatives, and another smart engineer could pick differently. - The decision is **durable** — you expect it to live ≥ 3 months. Tactical tweaks don't deserve ADRs. Don't write ADRs for: - Library version bumps with no API impact - Bug fixes - Naming choices inside a single file - Decisions you'll revisit next sprint …

How to install
mdr add higoralves/orc/adr-writing@sha256:df857feddf1e1d9dThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261020.7a1f356, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
