Diagnose pi-go agent loops and degenerate turns — "agent loop aborted", runaway thinking with no tool calls, repeated phrases. Discriminates genuine model repetition collapse from a race, a tool-parse failure, or a too-low guard, and A/B replays a seed session across providers.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Loop Forensics
Use when a run dies with `agent loop aborted: ...`, or a model burns a long turn
thinking without ever calling a tool. This skill decides **why** before anything
is changed: the abort message names a symptom, not a cause.
Sibling skill `pi-check-session-logs` covers *tool call errors*. This one covers
*repetition and runaway turns*. They do not overlap.

Log rows are `{"time","type","content",...}` with `type` in `session_start`,
`thinking`, `llm_text`, `tool_call`, `tool_result`, `user`, `error`. The model
name is on the `session_start` row — always record it, findings are per-model.
## How the guard actually works
`stuckDetector` (`internal/tui/agent_loop.go:119`) has three independent arms:
- `observe` — identical consecutive tool calls, trips at `maxRepeatToolCalls`=10.

How to install
mdr add dimetron/pi-go/pi-loop-forensics@sha256:c1f16ec5158ee410The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260809.0f4be13, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
