Talk to the user's OTHER Walnut work: discover it with `task_list` and its `scope`, send a task a message with `task_send`, ask for a result with `expect_reply`, answer a request with `in_reply_to`, and block with `walnut wait` only when you cannot continue without the answer. Use when you need to hand off findings, tell sibling work that shared work is ready, ask another task a question and get its answer back, or see what else is running, and instead of the built-in ListAgents / SendMessage…
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Talking to the user's other work
**When Walnut is available, do NOT use Claude Code's built-in `ListAgents` or `SendMessage` to reach other work. Use `task_send` with the task id.** Why: the built-in path is invisible to the human and to the task record, it carries no request id, and it does not survive a fork or a compaction; Walnut's does.
To find the task you should talk to, start near and widen. From inside a task a plain `task_list '{}'` already lists your folder (your project when your task has no folder); widen with `'{"scope":"project"}'`, then `'{"scope":"all"}'` for the board. A scoped result carries a `you` object naming where Walnut thinks you stand (`id`, `title`, `project`, `group_id`, `group_label`).
Two operations cover everything: `task_list` finds work, `task_send` talks to it. Both go through `walnut tools call`, which works from any Walnut-managed session on any host and from a plain terminal.
The old `walnut peers` commands were removed in 2026-08. `walnut peers` now exits with a usage error naming the replacements, so an old habit fails loudly instead of doing nothing:

How to install
mdr add evanzhang008/open-walnut/walnut-session-messaging@sha256:76dad59818e005c5The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261015.6f26e74, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
