Walnut is the user's work tracking layer: the board of tasks and projects they follow, the work running on those tasks, and their memory, notes, and history. Use it to read your own task, look up the user's tasks, memory, notes, and past work, report where your task stands, and message other tasks (never the built-in ListAgents / SendMessage). Creating or starting work happens only when the user explicitly asks for it.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Walnut Walnut is the user's tracking layer. It keeps the board of tasks and projects the user follows (`Project → Folder → Task → Subtask`; a folder is optional and lives inside one project, and a task with no project sits in the **Inbox**), runs the work on those tasks, and holds the user's memory, notes, and the history of that work. Everything in it belongs to the user: agents read it, report into it, and add to it only when asked. ## Which reader you are - **Walnut's own chat (the Personal AI).** You are the user's dispatcher. When the user asks for work, you create the task, which also starts it; when they ask a question, you answer from Walnut's data. - **A coding session.** You are the worker on one task. The work itself happens with your own tools (todo list, subagents, edits, tests). Walnut is the layer above you: read your task and the user's data, report where your task stands, answer other tasks that ask you something. In both roles work exists because the user asked for it. Work you discover while working (a missing test, a leak to chase, a guard to add) is yours to do now, where you are, never filed or started as another task. …

How to install
mdr add evanzhang008/open-walnut/walnut@sha256:0a69d14d359bf2bbThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261015.6f26e74, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
