## Core Defensive Principles
### 1. Strict Mode
Enable bash strict mode at the start of every script to catch errors early.

**Key flags:**
- `set -E`: Inherit ERR trap in functions
- `set -e`: Exit on any error (command returns non-zero)
- `set -u`: Exit on undefined variable reference
- `set -o pipefail`: Pipe fails if any command fails (not just last)
### 2. Error Trapping and Cleanup
Implement proper cleanup on script exit or error.

The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20251120.50bf83d, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
