Decides how to build an Umbraco feature: extension points, data model, Management API surface and frontend components, written to ARCHITECTURE.md, SPEC.md and mockups. Use once feature-explore has defined the problem, or on its own to capture a mockup starter for a product screen.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# feature-design > 🎯 **Design for change.** Every decision here is judged by one question: when this > changes, how big is the diff? Pick the Umbraco extension points, seams, and data shapes > that make the *next* change small and local — not the ones that are merely first to mind. Decide *how* to build what `feature-explore` defined. Output: which parts of Umbraco you're extending, the data model (if any), the Management API surface (if any), and the frontend component shape (if any). ## Where this writes The same per-feature plan folder `feature-explore` started. Owns two files, plus a `mockups/` folder when the feature has a UI: - **`ARCHITECTURE.md`** — the internal structural decisions: which extension point(s), the data model, key decisions with their rationale and the rejected alternative. This answers "how is it built, and why." - **`SPEC.md`** — the externally observable contract: the Management API surface and the frontend components' expected behavior, in concrete, testable terms. This answers "what must it do," and is what `feature-plan` slices into stories — keep it testable, not vague. …

How to install
mdr add mattbrailsford/umbraco-devkit/feature-design@sha256:c429c6df9f7987f2The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261018.3565e47, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
