Patterns for correlating events across log sources to detect multi-stage attacks, lateral movement, credential abuse, and data exfiltration, including alert-on-alert, threshold anomaly, and kill chain correlation. Use when designing correlation rules or investigating activity that spans several systems.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Log Correlation Patterns > Patterns for correlating events across multiple log sources to detect multi-stage attacks, lateral movement, credential abuse, and data exfiltration. ## Knowledge Base ### Why Correlation Matters Single-event detections catch simple attacks. Advanced threats operate across multiple stages, systems, and time windows. Correlation combines events from different sources to detect attack patterns that no single log source reveals on its own. Example: A brute-force attack (authentication log) followed by successful login (authentication log) followed by new scheduled task (Sysmon) followed by outbound connection to rare domain (DNS log) tells a complete attack story that individual alerts would only partially reveal. ### Correlation Techniques **Time-based correlation**: Events from different sources within a time window ``` Event A (authentication failure x5 in 60 seconds) -> Event B (successful authentication within 120 seconds) -> Event C (privilege escalation within 300 seconds) ``` **Entity-based correlation**: Events linked by a common entity (user, host, IP) ``` Same user account: - Authenticated from Location A at T1 …

How to install
mdr add hermeticormus/libresecops-claude-code/log-correlation-patterns@sha256:7d73f87e9a1e071eThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260930.71a2663, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
