diagnose-runtime SKILL.md skillA

diagnose-runtime from urmzd/dotfiles is an agent skill: a SKILL.md folder an AI agent loads when a task calls for it.

Install it, pinned
mdr add urmzd/dotfiles/diagnose-runtime@git:20260530.d3be4dd

Pins git:20260530.d3be4dd in mdr.lock. Pin the fingerprint instead.

Triage LOCAL runtime failures on your own machine: crashes and errors, hangs and deadlocks, slowness and high CPU/memory, and hardware/serial/USB issues. Method: reproduce, isolate (bisect, log, strace/dtruss, sample), form a hypothesis, verify the fix holds. Read-mostly: it inspects processes and logs, it does not commit, push, or edit source. Use when the user asks "why does this error", "why does the system hang after generating the PDF", "why is the computer running hot…

Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

What the file says

# Diagnose Runtime

Triage a local runtime problem on this machine. The remote counterpart for red
pipelines is [[diagnose-ci]]; once the cause is known and you want to apply and
re-ship the fix, hand off to [[fix-and-retry]]. This skill stops at a verified
diagnosis and a recommended fix.

## Method

Work the loop in order. Skipping reproduction is the most common way a "fix"
fails to hold.

1. **Reproduce.** Get a deterministic trigger before changing anything. Capture
the exact command, inputs, and environment. If it is intermittent, note the
frequency (1-in-N) and any correlation (load, time, specific input file). An
unreproducible bug cannot be verified fixed.
2. **Isolate.** Shrink the surface until the failing component is unambiguous:
bisect inputs (halve the data, the config, the call graph), bisect history
(`git bisect`), and attach an observer (logs, a tracer, a sampler). Change one
   variable at a time.
3. **Hypothesize.** State the suspected cause as a falsifiable sentence: "the
process blocks on a fsync to a full disk", not "I/O is slow". A hypothesis you
   cannot test is a guess.

How to install

The exact contents, by fingerprint
mdr add urmzd/dotfiles/diagnose-runtime@sha256:0bc8849e0f95abbc

The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260530.d3be4dd, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
