Design and audit CLI tools end-to-end: output modes, TTY detection, JSON piping, stderr/stdout separation, color/symbol semantics, the ui module pattern, signal handling, exit codes, and install.sh. Use when building, reviewing, or releasing any CLI and you need general CLI design guidance. Do NOT use for the mandatory urmzd/* portfolio CLI rules (argument-parser choice, self-update requirement, --format flag, global flags, install.sh template): cli-standards owns those and overrides this…
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# CLI Patterns ## Design Philosophy A junior developer should understand any CLI tool's behavior from `--help` alone. Prefer obvious defaults. Machine output (JSON) enables composability. All human-facing output goes to stderr. ## Output Modes ### Decision Tree | Scenario | Output Mode | Flag | |----------|------------|------| | Data/device API (zigbee-rest) | Always JSON on stdout | None needed | | Dual human + machine consumers (e.g. release tools, agent orchestrators) | `--format json\|human` | Default: human | | CLI with optional machine output (llmem) | `--json` flag + TTY auto-detect | Default: human if TTY, JSON if piped | | Human-only tool (e.g. demo recorders, interactive wizards) | Styled stderr only | No JSON mode | ### TTY Auto-Detection Standard behavior when no explicit format flag is given: ```text stdout.is_terminal() → human output (styled, colored) !stdout.is_terminal() → JSON output (machine-readable) ``` Override flags: - **`--json`** force JSON regardless of TTY - **`--no-color`** / `NO_COLOR=1` env. Strip ANSI escape codes - **`CI=true`** env. Treat as non-TTY (no spinners, no prompts, no color) ### JSON Conventions …

How to install
mdr add urmzd/dotfiles/build-cli@sha256:7bbbc58bf83f9947The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260530.d3be4dd, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
