How an Umbraco backoffice screen should look and behave for editors: matching existing screens, pickers vs. selects, first run, mistakes, waiting, finishing and returning, and the details most often sent back. Use when designing, building, changing or reviewing backoffice UI, including adding a banner, button, field or panel to an existing view or styling it like what's already there. For package structure, see `umbraco-backoffice-conventions`.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Backoffice UX ## *🎯 Why: Design for Change* A backoffice extension has a real user: the editor sitting in front of it. A feature that technically works but leaves them guessing is still a bug, just one the build and test suite can't see. UI fixes found after the build are the most expensive kind: each one is a change-rebuild-recheck round trip, and they arrive in a pile at the end. Every rule below comes from a correction that kept being made by hand. ## Match what's already there The single most common UI correction is "that doesn't feel like Umbraco". Before inventing an interaction, find how Umbraco or the host product already does the same kind of thing, and copy it. 1. **Docs first.** If `CLAUDE.md` or the official Backoffice Skills plugin names the pattern, that's ground truth. 2. **Then the screen next door.** Open the nearest existing screen of the same kind (the dashboard beside it, a sibling workspace, the CMS's own version of the feature) and match it: how boxes are used and spaced, whether tables run edge to edge inside a box, how headers, actions and help icons look, which icon colours it uses. …

How to install
mdr add mattbrailsford/umbraco-devkit/umbraco-backoffice-ux@sha256:55ec67239d8555a3The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261017.8be9de3, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
