Chezmoi dotfiles conventions and patterns. Use when modifying dotfiles, adding new managed files, working with chezmoi templates, or syncing agent skills and subagents through agentspec. Do NOT use for installing tools, running doctor, or updating a machine through the `dotfiles` CLI; use manage-machine.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# Chezmoi Dotfiles Conventions
Chezmoi is a general-purpose dotfile manager. This skill documents naming, templating, and agent-resource patterns that apply to any chezmoi-managed dotfiles repo. Substitute paths to your own chezmoi source directory wherever examples reference `~/.local/share/chezmoi`.
## File Naming
- `dot_` prefix maps to `.`. Example: `dot_zshrc` becomes `~/.zshrc`.
- `private_` prefix sets restrictive permissions. Example: `private_dot_ssh/`.
- `.tmpl` suffix indicates a chezmoi template using Go `text/template`.
- `run_once_before_` and `run_once_after_` scripts run once during `chezmoi apply`.
- `run_onchange_` scripts re-run when their content changes.
## Templates
Templates use Go `text/template` with chezmoi data from `~/.config/chezmoi/chezmoi.toml`:

Use `{{ .chezmoi.os }}` guards for platform-specific blocks.

How to install
mdr add urmzd/dotfiles/dotfiles@sha256:49e36344c290648fThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261005.6b6c1f3, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
