protocol-research SKILL.md skillA

protocol-research from hyperb1iss/hypercolor is an agent skill: a SKILL.md folder an AI agent loads when a task calls for it.

Install it, pinned
mdr add hyperb1iss/hypercolor/protocol-research@v1.0.0

Pins v1.0.0 in mdr.lock. Pin the fingerprint instead.

This skill should be used when researching device protocols before implementing drivers. Triggers on "reverse engineer protocol", "research device", "find protocol docs", "USB capture", "Wireshark USB", "how does this device work", "capture USB traffic", "document wire format", "write a protocol spec", "what protocol does this use", "add support for new device", "new device driver", or any pre-implementation research for crates/hypercolor-hal/ drivers.

Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

What the file says

# Protocol Research for Hypercolor Drivers

Research methodology for understanding device protocols before implementation. Every driver starts here — implementation without research produces broken, incomplete drivers.

## Research Phase Output

A completed research phase produces a **spec document** in `docs/specs/` containing:

1. Device identification (VID/PID, firmware versions, variants)
2. Transport type (HID, bulk, control, SMBus)
3. Packet layout diagrams (byte-by-byte with field names)
4. Command vocabulary (init, color, commit, firmware query)
5. Timing requirements (inter-packet delays, frame intervals)
6. Color byte ordering (RGB? RBG? BGR?)
7. Checksum/CRC algorithms
8. Topology (LED counts, zones, addressing)
9. Variant matrix (which models use which protocol version)
10. Known quirks and platform-specific behavior
11. Which integration surface the device needs (see below)

How to install

The exact contents, by fingerprint
mdr add hyperb1iss/hypercolor/protocol-research@sha256:babb9c2484eed2b5

The line at the top of this page pins the label v1.0.0, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
