target-authoring SKILL.md skillA

Use when writing or fixing custom MSBuild target chains, dependency extension, returns or cleanup contracts. Not for general build-performance tuning, import discovery or non-MSBuild systems.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
<!-- Modified by Cratis from dotnet's original (MIT): frontmatter, applicability, navigation and the changes listed in NOTICE. Upstream: https://github.com/dotnet/skills (plugins/dotnet-msbuild/skills/target-authoring/SKILL.md; see NOTICE) -->
# Custom Target Authoring Patterns
Cratis rules in `.cratis/ai/rules/` (including `csharp.md`, `specs.csharp.md`, and `orleans.md`) and the `cratis-*` skills win where they differ.
Canonical patterns from `Microsoft.Common.CurrentVersion.targets` in the MSBuild repository.
## The Three-Level Target Chain
Every major entry point (Build, Rebuild, Clean) delegates to a **property** listing its dependencies, which chains through Before → Core → After:
```xml
<PropertyGroup>
<BuildDependsOn>
BeforeBuild;
CoreBuild;
AfterBuild
</BuildDependsOn>
</PropertyGroup>
<Target Name="Build"
Condition=" '$(_InvalidConfigurationWarning)' != 'true' "
DependsOnTargets="$(BuildDependsOn)"
Returns="@(TargetPathWithTargetPlatformMoniker)" />
<!-- Empty extensibility targets — users override these -->
<Target Name="BeforeBuild" />
<Target Name="AfterBuild" />
```
…Read the whole file at its exact version.
How to install
mdr add cratis/ai/target-authoring@sha256:bc4d05190f403164The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261026.fc845e3, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
