Scans an unfamiliar codebase or feature area against the project Brain and reports the unknown-unknowns and tacit assumptions that would change the approach. Read-only. Use when entering unfamiliar territory, orienting at the start of an initiative, or before committing to a design or a risky change.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Find Unknowns Orient before building. The cheapest place to catch an unknown is before implementation, so this skill scans the territory an initiative touches and reports the gap between the project's map (the Brain: vocabulary, decisions, rules) and the codebase reality. The output is a triaged set of unknowns, not a plan and not code. This skill is read-only: it writes nothing to the Brain. It surfaces unknowns and hands each one to the skill that owns the write. ## The frame `DOTBRAIN.md` defines the four quadrants of unknowns; use those terms exactly. The Brain already answers many known knowns, so this skill spends its budget on **unknown knowns** and **unknown unknowns**: the two no planning step catches, because you do not know to ask. ## Stop before you start Orienting costs a scan the work may not repay. Skip it, and send the work straight to beads, unless at least one holds: - The initiative is unfamiliar territory, or crosses modules. - It carries meaningful risk. - You cannot yet state its intended shape in one paragraph. State the decision — orient or skip — with the reason, before going further. ## Process ### 1. Read the map …

How to install
mdr add arminzou/dotbrain/find-unknowns@sha256:0e8a2a35311f5371The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261009.1da8791, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
