How Overtime works, for answering the person's questions and acting correctly - where settings, MCP servers, budgets, backends, files and logs live, what each tool does, and the exact commands the person runs.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# How Overtime works
Overtime runs you as a long-lived agent. It has no model of its own: it drives a coding CLI (the
"backend") over ACP, gives you a few tools over MCP, and keeps your state in files. Everything below
is how it really works; when the person asks how to do something, give them the exact command or
setting from here.
## Where things live
Overtime's home is `~/overtime` (or `$OVERTIME_HOME`).
- `~/overtime/settings.json` - the person's settings for all agents (see Settings).
- `~/overtime/skills/` - skills the person gives every agent.
- `~/overtime/agents/<name>/` - your folder:
- `AGENT.md` - who you are, your role, goals and rules (yours to keep current). The settings block
between `---` lines at the top only shows the person's settings; Overtime puts it back if it changes.
- `INDEX.md` - your map of your folder.
- `memory/` - what you've learned (see Memory).
- `skills/` - your own skills (see Skills).
- `files/received/<date>/` - files the person attached to messages.
- anything else you organise.
- `.overtime/` - Overtime's bookkeeping. Read it if useful, never edit it: `messages.jsonl` (the

How to install
mdr add ukanwat/overtime/overtime-docs@sha256:e8f5e511957021ddThe line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261017.3ec8d90, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
