Decomposes a settled design doc into independently-workable, vertical-slice bead tasks under its epic, with acceptance criteria and dependencies. Runs once per design doc. NOT for taking work off the ready frontier one item at a time — that is manage-work-graph.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

# To Issues Take a design doc and decompose it into bead tasks under the epic. Each task is a thin, vertical slice that cuts through all integration layers - a demoable unit of work. The design doc remains the initiative-level design authority; beads carry execution. ## Stop before you start - No design doc, or a design still in flux — decomposing an unsettled design produces work items you will re-cut. Wait, or run `to-design`. - Work that fits in a single bead — `manage-work-graph`'s `references/work-intake.md` owns that call. - This doc already decomposed — check the epic for existing work items before adding more. ## Process ### 1. Find the design doc If the user passes a design doc path or name, use that. Otherwise, find the latest design doc in `.brain/designs/`: ```bash ls -t .brain/designs/*.md | head -1 ``` Read the full design doc, especially `Goals`, `Design`, `Known Unknowns`, `Implementation Notes`, `Deviations`, and `Non-goals`. Completion: the design doc slug, its goals, and its non-goals are restated to the user before any slicing begins. ### 2. Draft vertical slices …

This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
