Use whenever you are writing, reviewing, or refactoring tests in this repo. Enforces the project's contract that tests assert observable behaviour, mock only at system seams, stay small and table-driven, and never drift into "did the mock get called" territory. Trigger phrases: "write tests for", "add a test", "fix this test", "are these tests testing the right thing?", "review my tests".

Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.

What the file says

# Tests that respect boundaries

## Why this skill exists

In this repo, tests are starting to drift past their own boundaries: hook tests that assert on `expect(mocks.someStore).toHaveBeenCalledWith(...)` instead of asserting on `result.current`; storage tests that re-verify what the persistence layer already proves; multi-hundred-line files that prove the same behaviour six different ways. Each one of those is a test that locks in the *implementation* — so harmless refactors break tests and the suite stops being a safety net and starts being a tax.

This skill is the practical contract: **one module, one test file, observable assertions, system-seam mocks, table-driven cases, hard size caps**. It supplements the rules in [`.github/instructions/testing.instructions.md`](../../instructions/testing.instructions.md) and the TDD discipline in [`tdd/SKILL.md`](../tdd/SKILL.md) — it does not replace them.

How to install

The exact contents, by fingerprint
mdr add chrisreddington/flight-school/tests-that-respect-boundaries@sha256:5c603ca50f4b1d08

The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20260526.7b314d2, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
