Chooses, introduces, and removes design patterns such as Strategy, Factory, Adapter, and Observer, starting from a real smell. Use when weighing a pattern, when conditionals or duplicated variation grow, or when reviewing code for over-engineering.
Collected from public GitHub. Every version is saved exactly as it was and never changes. Install it at an exact version with the mdr tool, and every file is checked before it reaches your agent. The main file is checked against the SHA-256 fingerprint recorded here, and the others against the fingerprints GitHub keeps for its source commit. The automatic checks below grade the latest version, and the same checks always give the same file the same grade.
What the file says
# Applying design patterns A design pattern is a known answer to a recurring problem, and every pattern is paid for in types, indirection, and places to look. This skill starts from the problem in the code and reaches for a pattern only when the problem is real and the price is worth paying. The writing-clean-code skill owns names, functions, code smells, and language idioms. The applying-clean-architecture skill owns layers, ports, adapters at architecture boundaries, and the composition root. Repository and Unit of Work live in the applying-clean-architecture and working-with-databases skills, and Retry, Circuit Breaker, Bulkhead, and other resilience patterns live in the building-resilient-services skill. When the project already solves a kind of problem with a pattern, follow the project over this skill. ## Principles - **Problem first.** Start from a smell you can point to in the code or a real constraint, such as a second variant that exists today or a requirement the user stated. Never start from the catalog. The Azure Architecture Center puts it as "Choose a pattern based on the problem you need to solve, not the technology you want to use". …

How to install
mdr add dayfinggg/openai-codex-agent-skills/applying-design-patterns@sha256:cd6b41d7ad34b167The line at the top of this page pins the label git:20261015.18f69f5, which is what most people want. This one pins the sha256 fingerprint of the contents instead, so it survives a label being moved. Either way the exact version is written to mdr.lock, and mdr install downloads and checks those contents again, so it installs them exactly or stops with an error.
